CAPT Ottis H Abney, USCG, commanded Coast Guard Base Ketchikan, Alaska from Jul 1967 to Feb 1969. He was ordered to Hawaii to command the newly constructed USCG Cutter Mellon. Captain & Mrs Abney, the former Marjorie Grover of Port Angeles, visited relatives in Port Angeles during February 1969 enroute to Honolulu. CAPT Abney enlisted in the USCG in Port Angeles in January 1933 for duty at the Quillayute River
Lifeboat Station. He served on continuous active duty in many capacities and localities since that time. Before transferring to Ketchikan, he commanded the Seattle-based USCG Cutter Wachusett for two years. CAPT Abney retired in Nov 1972 after 39 years active Coast Guard duty.
