John farmed in Schuylkill county before moving to Mount Carmel, Northumberland county, where he took up coal mining. He married Sarah Krieger in 1822 and had ten children: Mary, Jacob, Andrew, Edward, Daniel, John Jr, Sarah, Aaron, Anna, and Eli.

John and Sarah were founding members of Mount Carmel's Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, organized in May 1855. The church closed in April 2019.
