On 24 March 1897, at age 21, he enlisted in the Army at Fort Riley. He gave his occupation as barber. He was discharged on 23 March, 1900 at the end of his enlistment. He was stationed in Cuba, a private, and his service record was "excellent."

On his WWI draft registration card, dated 12 Sept 1918, he gave his DOB as 22 Feb 1876, was working as skilled labor at Rock Island Arsonal, married to Grace Jarboe, signed in a good hand, and was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair.
