Georgia Governor. He studied law, was admitted to in 1852 and practiced law in Monticello, Georgia. At the advent of the Civil War, he enlisted as Private in the Confederate Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 13th Georgia Infantry Regiment. After the war, he was judge of the Griffin County Court, Mayor of Griffin, Georgia, (1869-72) and was a member and president of the Georgia Senate, (1880-83). Following the death of Governor Alexander Stephens, he was appointed as a Democrat the 51st Governor of Georgia, serving March 4, 1883 to May 10, 1883. After leaving office, he served as judge of the Georgia Superior Court, (1886-93) and was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1896.
