Mr. Charles Morgan Campbell was born in Princeton, New Jersey, July 8, 1830 and departed this life at his home in Virden, Ill. May 8, 1904 at the age of 73 years and 10 months.

When he was about ten years old, Mr. Campbell came with his parents to Jersey County, Illinois and after a time moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where they remained until about thirty years ago (1874), when he came to Virden, Macoupin County, Illinois, where he continued to reside until the time of his death.

On the fourth day of April, 1850, he was married to Mrs. Julia M. Weston and to them were born five children, three of whom, Messrs. Horace and George Campbell and Mrs. Perry Beck remain and are residents of this community and were permitted to be with their father during his long illness.

Mrs. Campbell, his first wife died on the twenty-second of August 1866 and on the fifteenth of February 1877, he was married to Mrs. Rebecca Utt who survives him.

At about the age of twenty-one years he was converted and joined the Baptist Church at Jerseyville, Illinois, and on coming to this community, transfered his membership to the Virden Baptist Church where he ever remained faithful and consistent. During his membership in the Virden Church he filled four official positions: namely, Deacon, Trustee, Member of the Financial Committee and for twelve years or more was janitor of the church.

The funeral was held at the Baptist Church Monday afternoon, May 8th, conducted by the pastor, assisted by Rev. M.M. Want of the M.E. Church, Rev L.H. Schoch of the Presbyterian Church and Rev Milo Nethercutt of the Christian Church and was attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends. The church was profusely decorated with cut flowers and potted plants, and the chair in which he used to sit was draped in black. The body was laid to rest in the Virden Cemetery.
