An Arizona cattle baron, Hooker gained prominence throughout the west with his twenty thousand head of cattle and his ranch which measured twenty-five by forty miles. In 1881, he brought a small herd of Herefords to his range, thus being the first person to have Herefords in the western part of the country. Hooker also raised horses on his ranch and raced them in Los Angeles. Among the people of Los Angeles, he was granted much respect and esteem for his success as a businessman.
