William C. Smith

We clip the following from the Wellsville Union:

William C. Smith, a pioneer resident of Yellow Creek township, died at his home Sunday evening.

Mr. Smith had been in quite feeble health for some years, but was able to go about and was in the city last Tuesday. He took sick last Friday and gradually sank until the end came.

He was for many years a ruling elder in Oak Ridge Presbyterian church, being ordained shortly after the organization of the church about 1850, and one of the mainstays of the congregation, being liberal and public spirited. He was held in highest esteem by the entire community. He is survived by his wife and five children, Judge P. M. Smith, Attorney A. G. Smith and W. E. Smith, of this city; Miss Kate A. Smith at the homestead, and Mrs. W. T. Jenkins near Alderlick.

Mr. Smith was born June 24, 1817, on the farm where he died, his parents settling in Yellow Creek township about the year 1805. They were both natives of Scotland, but were married in this country. He was a farmer by occupation, and personally helped clear and put into cultivation a large part of the farm and during a part of his life was engaged in stock dealing, in which he was phenomenally successful, and being a man of uncompromising honesty and integrity, possessed of unusual good judgment, enjoyed the confidence and esteem of the entire community.

More than half a century ago he was married to Miss Jennette Bailey, who, with three sons and two daughters, survive him, this being the first death in the family during more than fifty years of wedded life.

Funeral services were held at his late residence Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Hargest. Interment at Spring Hill cemetery.
