Col. Paul was born in Cape François [present-day Cap-Haîtien], Santo Domingo. He was educated at Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France. He served under Napoleon as a Captain and Colonel, and was wounded in the Battle of Trafalgar [1805]. He immigrated to America in 1808, and located in St. Louis, Missouri, where he married Marie Therese Eulalie Chouteau, Apr 9, 1812. His death in 1851 was the result of uremia and acute nephritis.
