In the 1850 Federal Census of Columbia County, Florida, he was living with his parents and siblings. The household included: Richard S. Mott, age 39, a farmer with real property valued at $1600, born in Georgia; Margaret E., age 33, born in Georgia; Alfred A., age 13, born in Georgia; Burton L, age 11, born in Florida; Egenia M., age 9, born in Florida; Isabella M., age 7, born in Florida; Emily A., age 4, born in Florida; and Henryetta, age 2, born in Florida. According to the 1850 Federal Slave Schedule for Columbia County, Florida, his father owned six slaves: a 27 year old female and a four year old female; a 14 year old male, a ten year old male, a seven year old male, and a two year old male.

In the 1860 Federal Census of Nassau County, Florida, he was living with his parents and siblings. The household included: Richard Mott, age 49, born in Georgia, $2000 real property and $7000 personal; Margaret, age 43, born in Georgia; Burton, age 22, born in Florida, a farm laborer with $150 in personal property; Isabella, age 17, born in Florida; Emilie, age 15, born in Florida; Henrietta, age 13, born in Florida; Richard, age 12, born in Florida; Joseph, age 9, born in Florida; Thomas, age 7, born in Florida; and William, age 3, born in Florida. He married Jane Green in 1868 and by 1880, he and Jane had six children and were living in Georgia. In the 1880 Federal Census of Satilla Mills, Georgia (Camden County), he was living with his wife and children on a farm they owned. The household included: Burton, age 42, born in Florida to a father from Florida and a mother from Georgia; Jane, age 28, born in Florida to a father from South Carolina and a mother from Georgia; Marguerite H., age 11, born in Florida; Eunice, age 10, born in Florida; James W., age 9, born in Florida; Alice, age 5, born in Florida; Bryant, age 3, born in Florida; and William H., age 2, born in Florida.

The household included: Burton L., Mott, age 61, born May 1839 in Florida to a father from Florida and a mother from Georgia; Jane, age 51, born December 1848 in Florida to a father from South Carolina and a mother from Georgia, married 32 years, six children; Bryant G., age 24, born January 1876 in Florida to parents from Florida; Henry, age 20, born November 1879 in Georgia to parents from Florida; Bell, age 16, born October 1883 in Georgia; Euda, age 14, born September 1885 in Georgia; Lacy, age 11, born October 1888 in Georgia; and Robert, age 10, born September 1889 in Georgia.

Jane was 62, married once for 42 years, nine living children of 11 born. Their son Lacy Mott was 23, working as a carpenter.

He died seven years later and was buried in Mott Cemetery. His wife died the following year in Orange County, Florida and was laid to rest in Crosby Lake Cemetery in Bradford County, Florida.
