EDNA - Velma M. Rhodes, 89, of Edna, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

"Ma", as she was affectionaly known, was born May 31, 1915, on the family farm, near Bartlett, Kan., the youngest of six children, to Walter Thurman and Eva (Guthrie) Reedy. She grew up on the farm northwest of Bartlett and atteded the Lockard District #28 school through the seventh grade. In 1928, she moved with her family to rural Coffeyville and she attended Coffeyville Junior High School and Senior High School, graduating from the new Field Kindley High School, Coffeyville, in 1932.

In the fall of 1932, she entered Pittsburg State College. After receiving a three year teaching certificate, she moed to Edna and worked at the Edna Post Office for several years.

She and Hubert Rhodes were married on Oct. 15, 1936, in Oswego. Following their marriage, they lived in Edna. After World War II, they moved to Oswego, where they were employed at the Labette County secretary's office for several years before returning to Edna. From 1951 to 1957, she was employed with the Continental Can and Dixon Industries in Coffeyville. Her husband preceded in death on July 19, 1993.

For over 50 years, she was a member of the Hawkins Homemakers Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Edna.

Those surviving include two sons, Richard Rhodes, Edna; and David Rhodes and wife, Diane South Edna, Okla.; three grandchildren, Carla Rader, Craig Rhodes and Lisa Brightmire; six great-grandchildren, Evi Rader, Myles Rader, Dylan Rhodes, Mary Goddard, April Brightmire and Nick Brightmire; a sister Hallie Waugh, Fairview, Okla.; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday at the North Edna Cemetery. Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Altamont was in charge of arrangements.
