Emory Donald (Don) Pounder, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Doris N. Perry-Pounder, died October 27, 2011.

Mr. Pounder was born in Tanglewood, TX, on May 12, 1919, the son of James Luther Pounder and Marjorie Alma Bissell Pounder.

Don served his country with honor in the United States Navy from 1935 until 1956, serving in WWII (awarded three battle stars) and the Korean Conflict.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, he began his second career, working in Civil Service at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He retired as a management analyst from the Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He then began his third career in the real estate business, rising to Realtor and serving as the President of the Trident Board of Realtors from 1984-1985.

Don had a life-long love of learning and told his children "Remember, what you learn today is what you'll know tomorrow." He attended George Washington University, The Armed Forces Industrial War College, The Realtor's Institute, Radio Operator's School, Damage Control School Fire-Fighting School, and Radio Material School. In his retirement he attended The Citadel Evening College, taking classes in his favorite subject, History. He was a strong proponent of public education, serving as President of the North Charleston High School PTA and the Sports Booster Club for two years. He believed that all parents should be involved in their children's education.

Mr. Pounder was an instructor at the Radio Material School and the SC Realtor's Institute, and he also tutored in local public schools and for the Trident Literacy Association. He was a very active member of his community and of Christ Our King Catholic Church. He belonged to the Eighty-Eight Club, The National Association of Federal Employees, The Navy League, WWII Sailors, and Toastmasters.

Don believed in "green spaces" long before that was a popular phrase. He served as a founding member of the Board of the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, serving for twelve years, several of those as Chairman of the Board. He was also a member of the Charleston Shipyard Federal Credit Union's Supervisory Committee for 23 years. Don believed that people should invest their time and talent in their community, and he volunteered his time with The American Red Cross, Hospice, and East Cooper and Bon-Secours-St. Francis Hospitals, giving thousands of hours of his time. He especially loved giving his poem "A New Baby - Boy or Girl - Can Change Your World" to new moms and dads. Don loved writing poetry for family and friends. He received many awards at the local and state levels for his poetry and other papers he had written over the years. Many of his poems were published in the National Library of Poetry.

Mr. Pounder was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine Marie Dapogny Pounder, and his second wife, Jacqueline S. Godfrey-Pounder. He is survived by his four children, Donna Lynn LeBlanc of Pineville, LA; Donald B. Pounder (Donna Jo) of North Kingston, RI; and Douglas E. Pounder (Lona) and Mary Pounder Bebensee (Mark) of Mount Pleasant, SC; seven grandchildren, Christopher Pounder, Dr. Lacey Pounder-McNeely (Rory), J.D. Pounder (Erin); Lory Hayes (Duffy), Thomas Pounder (Mindy), Alan Bebensee, and Lorraine Bebensee; and three great-grandchildren.

Relatives, family, and friends are invited to Mr. Pounder's Visitation, October 30, 2011, between 5-7 PM at the McAlister-Smith Mt. Pleasant Chapel, where the Rosary will be recited at 5 P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held, October 31, 2011, at 10:30 AM at Christ Our King Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Final Commendation and farewell with military honors will be held at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
