Gabriel Norton Swezy came to California from New York in the summer of 1849 after learning of the discovery of gold. He settled in Maryville and re-thought the idea of gold mining, instead decided to make his money providing the services and goods the miners would need. Gabriel bought five hundred acres of land and planted a variety of fruits and vegetables. He played an active part in laying out the town of Marysville. Soon he joined in with Stephen Fields to form the first law office in Marysville. A few years later he returned to New York state to bring his wife, Jane Adeline Whitney and their young daughter, Ellen to live in Marysville. The Swezy’s became the parents of Charles Edwin who lived most of his 69 years in Marysville practicing law and in 1859 their three-year-old son, Ira A., sadly died. Gabriel and Jane’s daughter Ellen, married Lieutenant Colonel Theodore A. Coult who served in the 5 th California Infantry in 1867. Just three years later Ellen found herself a young mother of Daisy and baby Addie, and suddenly a widow living with her parents.

Gabriel was also very involved in local politics serving as district and city attorney. Gabriel's death was deeply felt by his family and friends, but his years of dedication to Marysville will be felt for years to come.
