Pasadena Loses Useful Citizen - David J. Macpherson Dies Late Sunday - Started Mt. Lowe Railway Project - For Forty Years Resident of Crown City
David J Macpherson, former president of the Pasadena Board of Education and a resident of this city for the last forty years, died suddenly late last night at his home, 1120 Atchison street, following a heart attack.
Mr. Mcpherson, a civil engineer, made the surveys which started the project now known as the Mt. Lowe Railway. His original surveys were made on Mt. Wilson, but he later interested Prof. Thaddeus Lowe in the scheme and the scene of operations was switched to Mt. Lowe.
Since his retirement from business fifteen years ago, Mr. Macpherson devoted considerable time to writing, recently publishing a book on international finance entitled "Gold Basis and Bondage," which is now being translated for publication in France.
He was a native of London, Ont., Can., the date of his birth being January 12, 1854. Mr. Macpherson was a graduate of Cornell University.
He leaves a son, Donald T. Macpherson, and two daughters, Mrs. Agnes M. Elliott and Margaret V. Macpherson. His wife died in 1924 and a son, William M. Macpherson, was killed in action in the World War. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Dr. Josiah Sibley, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Macpherson was a member, will officiate.
