Letter from Jerry Capshaw:
This is the info I have on William Henry Capshaw, which came from his youngest daughter Francis Marion Capshaw who was 96 years old when I spoke, in person, with her. William Carrol Capshaw was the son of William Pickney Capshaw and Sara Margaret Gann, born in Warren County, TN. William fought in the Civil War with the US troops, while his father, and some of his brothers fought for the south. After the war and his return to TN, relations were somewhat strained and after a few years, William left TN and migrated to MO. Allegedly, when he joined the army, his drawl made him hard to understand, and when he gave his name, Carrol was understood as Harold and he became William Harold Capshaw. After leaving the army, he continued to use Harold. Where the Henry came from, no one seems to know.
