Death of an Octogenarian.

Davis Atkins died about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his late home, 509 South Vermillion street, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Atkins was born in Chester county, Pa., March 6, 1818, of Irish and French parentage. On Nov. 16, 1842 [1841 according to her obituary], he married Mary [Elizabeth] Batton [Batten]. They lived in Pennsylvania for a short time and then moved west to Illinois, settling at Holderman's Grove. They left there in 1846, and afterwards resided at Seneca and Odell, moving to Streator in 1876, where the deceased made his home continuously up to the time of his death. To them were born six children, the surviving ones being Mrs. Lillie (Frank) Cregan and Mrs. Clara Peddicord, of this city; Mrs. Anna (A. Bruce) Peddicord, of Kansas; Charles, of Dakota; and Frank, of Chicago. The other member of the family, Fred, was killed about 25 years ago at Seneca in a most peculiar manner. He was struck by a falling smoke-stack which had been knocked over by a wagon attached to a runaway team. The young man was a veteran of the civil war.

The first wife of Mr. Atkins died in this city in 1892, and on December 4th of the following year he was married to Mrs. Hester E. Moody, who survives the deceased.

Mr. Atkins, during a portion of his residence in Streator, was engaged in the insurance business. He also served a number of terms as justice of the peace. He was a member of the Methodist church, having been converted at a camp meeting held in Pennsylvania over sixty years ago.

He had been an Odd Fellow for more than thirty years, and at the time of his death was a member of Streator Encampment No 157 and Streator Lodge No. 602, I. O. O. F.

The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the M. E. Church.
