Son of Amos Smith and Ann Kenway Smith. When his father died at a young age of 39, Henry and his brother and two sisters were very young. Their mother remarried to a widower, Jacob Rayles, who had two sons and the blended family was very hard on the Smith children. The children soon established their own homes and then moved to Kansas. Their mother, Ann, had two daughters by her second marriage, and the Rayles family moved to Nebraska.

Henry William Smith enlisted as a private on October 18, 1861. on 25 November 1861 he was with in Company K, 10th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois. He mustered out on 22 November 1865 in San Antonio, Texas

He married Maretta Jane Kelsey 6 January 1869 in Longpoint, Livingston County, Illinois. He moved his family to Reno County, Kansas in the mid 1870's. His son, Harry Reno Smith was born February 1875 and is said to be the first white child born in Reno County, thus the middle name of Reno was given him. He had twelve children.

Henry William Smith was also a poet. He published a book of his prose/poetry called "Thoughts and After Thoughts".
Copies of this book are still in posession of his descendants.

After Maretta died in 1915, he married a widow by the name of Julia Sampson Boyd in Harvey County, Kansas. By 1920 he was living in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he died in 1926.
