U.S. Congressman. He taught school for five years, moved to Akron, Ohio and was the deputy Summit County auditor and treasurer, (1855-58). He was senior auditor of Summit County (1858-63), served as county treasurer in 1863 and was manager of the Akron branch of C. Altman and Company. During the Civil War, he was a Sergeant in Company F, 164th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Union Army and served in fortifications around Washington D.C. After the war, he became president of the farming implements Altman and Miller Company, was president of the Akron City Council, was as commissioner of Summit County, (1874-75) and a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1885-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. After his term, he resumed is former business activities until his death atage 79.
