80th birthday, Fort Scott KS Tribune, Oct 17, 1980**
Vernon A. Hoggatt will celeberate his octogenerian year Oct 17 at his home, Farlington Lake, Crawford county, KS. He spent many years in the field of education before his retirement in 1966. Returning here from California, the Hoggatts built a home at Farlington Lake. His many interests were curtailed in 1974 when he suffered a stroke. Hoggatt was born near Garland, KS, the son of Noah and Addie Hoggatt. He grew up on a farm, sharing tasks with his sister, Dora (Mrs. Ben Greenfield of Fort Scott). He attended business college at Pittsburg, KS and at the age of 18 he became employed by the Miller State Bank. He recalls it was about then that he bought his first suit.
In 1922 he married Edith Shead of Arcadia. She was teaching school and his extra custodial duties helped finance his return to school. A degree from Pittsburg College with upper division work from USC in California led to many years in education.
Hoggatt taught his first year at Buck Run School near Fort Scott at a salary of $90 a month. He spent four years as a grade school principal at Baxter Springs, then was principal in Pittsburg nine years. He then went to California when he worked in the El Centro junior high and also at Azusa. He became principal at Hermosa Beach, CA, and then was promoted to the Welfare and Attendance Division, Los Angeles School System. Upon his retirement in 1966 he was awarded a Resolution of Congratulations adopted by the Council of the City of Los Angeles. Hoggatt was cited for "his strong interest in young people and helping those who were too proud to ask for public assistance, even going so far as to use his own money to help pay their personal expenses."
The Hoggatts have a son, Charles Vernon Hoggatt, who lives with his family at Palm Bay, Fla. Grandson Gregory works at Disney World and lives at Orlando, Fla.
