STATESBORO - G.B. Bowen, 79, died Thursday at his home after a short illness.

He was a native of Bulloch County and had lived in the 44th District all of his life. He was a retired merchant and a farmer and a member of Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Miriam Fulgham of Savannah, Nrs. Martha Hutchinson of Winter Haven, Fla., Mrs. Jackie Foy and Mrs. Ann Lupton, both of Statesboro; three sisters, Mrs. R.L. Bowen of Claxton, Mrs. Otis Holloway of Metter and Mrs. Hubert Watson of Twin City; and eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro is in charge.

He was known by virtually all his contemporaries as "G B" Bowen. He was the owner of a very large Pond, with a "good-sized" Spillway, in the Southern part of Bulloch County, on the East side of the Daisy-Nevils Road where he operated a Mill frequented by his neighbors for grinding meal. The "G. B. Bowen Pond" extended onto lands owned by his neighbors who granted him water rights for different reasons, it is said. Now, the Pond no longer exists for the Dam has been breached, and never has been repaired, due to the size and different owner of the land, I suppose.
