CANYON — Lois E. Rice, 85, of Canyon died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 in Sherman.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church in Canyon with the Rev. Tom Moore, the Rev. Rick Enns and Bob Shepard officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Telephone. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Rice was born May 6, 1926, in Duncan, Okla., to William and Naomi Lee Wilbourn. She was raised and attended school in Plainview. She married Truman Mooney in 1945 and they had one daughter, Phyllis Ann. She moved to Amarillo in 1969 and married Karl Rice. She opened The Furniture Galleries in Canyon in 1971 and became mayor of Canyon by write-in election in 1990. She served as mayor until 2007. Lois began volunteering for the area in 1971 and became a full-time volunteer after selling her business in 1996. She was a member of First United Methodist Church; West Texas A&M University Foundation; United Way Governing Board; Leadership Texas Alumni; Family Support Services Board; Chamber of Commerce, serving two terms as president; University Study Club; Womens Forum; Toastmasters; Canyon Rotary; FEMA Board for the state of Texas; Maverick Boys and Girls Club Board; and was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl G. Rice; a sister, Edith Clements; two brothers, John and Wayne Wilbourn; and her grandson, Micah Theron Shepard.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Shepard and husband Joel of Telephone; a granddaughter, Liesl Brooke Shepard of Carrollton; a great-grandson, Shayler Carlton Shepard of Decatur; three sisters, Wilmoth Cates of Plainview, Dorothy Frantz of Guymon, Okla., and Neva Kampfer and husband Gary of Tyler; a sister-in-law, Naomi Wilbourn of Lubbock; three nieces, Jacalyn Spain of Guymon, Lynn Brown of Euless and Kisa Kampfer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a nephew, Kirt Kampfer of Tyler; and two stepdaughters, Judy Reiner of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jan Yeager of Amarillo.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. in Brooks Chapel.

The family suggests memorials be to the Canyon Area Library, 1501 Third Ave., Canyon TX 79015, WTAMU Foundation, P.O. Box 766, Canyon, TX 79016, or a favorite local charity.
