Death of William Petty

Wm. Petty, the well known retired lumber dealer and Lineville businessman, died at his home on Line Street at about 7:30 a.m., Saturday, December 30, after an illness of about four weeks from pneumonia. He had passed the acute stage of the attack several days before and hopes were entertained by his family and friends for his recovery, but a slight cold brought on a relapse of the disease and he passed away as above stated. He had until recently identified with the business interests of Lineville and was quite successful, owning at the time of his death a fine farm in Decatur county, 5 miles west of this place. The following brief sketch of his life was handed to us by Rev. Scarborough who came from Mason, Mo., to preach the funeral sermon of his deceased friend:

He was united with the Baptist church when he was 21 years old. He was married September 24, 1867, to Mary E. Poland, daughter of John R Poland. All through his last sickness he expressed a desire that he might live to do better and lead a good life, as he said he had repented, and the family believes he is safe in the arms of Christ.

His funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. church South, conducted by Wl. L. Scarborough, a former pastor, now of Macon, Mo. The remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery.
