Martha Ann Sweatman was born in February of 1845 (inconsistant with tombstone date), in Georgia. She married William Anderson; and to this union was born seven known children - Thomas Berry, Alonzo, Mary Melissa (Guffey), William Andrew, Nancy Plessa (Guffey), Joseph Franklin, and James Monroe.

After the death of her first husband, Martha married widower Ephraim Berry Guffey on Janaury 6, 1879, in Jackson County, Alabama. To this union was born two known children - Martha C. (Chambers) and Latisha Alemda (Lemons).

Two of Martha's daughters from her first marriage also married into the Guffey Family. Daughter Mary Melissa Guffey married Ephraim's youngest brother, Elijah Pierce Guffey; and Nancy Plessa married Ephriam's nephew, George Washington Guffey (son of Ephraim's brother Charles Underwood Guffey).

Ephraim died prior to 1910, when Martha is found in that year's census listed as a widow, living next door to her daughter, Mary Guffey. By 1920, she had relocated to Oklahoma. She was enumerated in the 1920 US Federal Census as residing in the home of her son James Anderson in Price's Chapel, Oklahoma.

Martha's tombstone incorrectly reflects a date of death of 1920; however, she was alive and well in 1920, as well as ten years later in 1930, when she was enumerated in the household of her son Joseph Anderson in McKey, Oklahoma. She was listed there as eighty-seven year old "Marthie A. Guffey". She passed away sometime later.
