RITES HELD FOR DOCTORS' MOTHER
Mrs. Gertrude Mildred Welch, 75, of 110 E. Lake street, mother of Dr. Allan D. Welch and Dr. William B. Welch, Barrington physicians and surgeons, died of a heart attack Christmas morning at the William B. Welch home on E. Hillside avenue while the family was in the midst of opening Christmas presents.
She had been in good health until just a few days before she was fatally stricken when a slight heart condition became apparent, and her death came as a great shock to her family and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fairbanks-Stirlen funeral home on West Main street, by the Rev. Joseph B. Williams, rector of St. Michael Episcopal Church. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Chicago.
Widow of Dr. Dudley Welch, dental surgeon in Chicago for more than 30 years. Mrs. Welch who was Gertrude Loux was born in Russell, Ontario, Canada, Aug 7, 1877. Her marriage to Dr. Welch took place in 1901 and the couple settled on Chicago's south side.
Mrs. Welch was a registered nurse. She was a graduate of the Women's and Children's hospital of Chicago, after receiving her early education in Canada. Her husband died in 1930.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church, Chicago, and was a life member and past president of the Daughters of the British Empire and a supporter of the British Old Peoples home at Hollywood, Ill. She served as president of the board of directors of the home at one time and at the time of her death was a member of board. Memorial contributions for Mrs. Welch are going to this institution.
Another interest to which Mrs. Welch was devoted was the Chicago Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was active in the volunteer department, serving on the board.
Survivors in addition to the two Barrington doctors, are four other children, Mrs. Elizabeth Ingerle of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Martha Breckinridge of San Diego, Calif., Robert Lyon Welch of Beverly Hills, Calif., Mrs. Ann W. Austin of Cleveland, Ohio; 11 grand-children; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest A. Agur of Gulfport, Miss., and Mrs. Fred A. Day of Toronto, Canada, a brother-in-law, Dr. William B. Welch of Gulfport, Fla.
