Alfred Arthur Summers, who went by his middle name, Arthur, was born December 27, 1856 in Hastings, Holborn, Middlesex (now part of London) in England to James and Margaret Lindan Summers. He was christened at St. Andrews Church, Holburn on March 4, 1857. The third child of three siblings, a brother, Robert and sisters Margaretta and Alice, Arthur grew up on Havelock Road, Chichester, Hastings, Sussex. Their father was a silversmith. Arthur attended the Drapers College for Boys in Tottenham until 1871. After his father died in 1878, he and his mother, brother, Robert and sister, Alice settled at 113 Loughborough Road East in Lambeth, London where he worked as a warehouseman until he emigrated.

Arthur voyaged from London on the Egyptian Monarch and landed in New York on May 8, 1882. He went on to Canada in 1883 and settled in Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada where he met and courted Rosine Marie Blondé. He was 6' 2" with grey eyes and light colored hair. He and Rose married June 11, 1885 at the Chatham Presbyterian Church. They settled in Wallaceburg, Bothwell, Ontario where he worked as a bartender. Their first child, Alice Rose was born March 1, 1887. Their second child died in infancy.

The Summers emigrated to San Jose, California in early 1893. Arthur naturalized as an American citizen on February 3 and tended bar at the Saint James Hotel, the Henry Jeantrout Saloon, and the J.W. Shannon Saloon. His youngest child Mary Ethel was born January 5, 1894. Like her father, Ethel went by her middle name. The Summers family enjoyed the fanfare of Presidents William McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt's visits to San Jose in 1901 and 1903. In 1904 Arthur and William Cole became partners of the Imperial Saloon at 118 Lightston Street. The 1906 earthquake devastated their business, which they sold in August of that year.

Arthur disowned his daughter, Alice for marrying an Irishman, John Maloney in 1907, but recanted when his first grandchild, Alice Mae Maloney was born January 6, 1908 and bought her first pair of baby shoes. In 1910 Alice returned to San Jose with her daughter when his health failed. Arthur's chronic alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver caused his death on May 7, 1911. He was buried May 9, 1911 at Oak Hill Memorial Park San Jose, section T1, lot 17, plot 7. His grave is unmarked.
