Enjoyed flower arranging and traveling
Gertrude E. (Anderson) Steiner, 88, formerly of Spring Garden Avenue, Berwick, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at Bloomsburg Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 23, 1923, in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Julia (Stuttler) Anderson. A graduate of Shickshinny High School, Class of 1941, she went on to become a proofreader for the former Specialty Type Setters in Berwick. Mrs. Steiner was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Berwick; Amaranth; a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout leader at Camp Lavigne. Among her interests were gardening, flower arranging, reading, traveling and crafts.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 53 years, Edwin "Ned" Steiner, who died Sept. 3, 1996; an infant brother, Arthur Anderson; and a sister, Ida Mae Dungey.
Surviving are her one daughter, Sharon, wife of Dennis Maxfield, of Berwick; three sons: Arthur Steiner and his wife, Sharon, of Bloomsburg; Edwin "Ned" Steiner of Stroudsburg; and William J. Steiner and his wife, Mary, of Bloomsburg; one sister, Julie Ann Mason of Berwick; five grandchildren: Jane Elizabeth Welliver, Dennette Louise Moul, John Aaron Maxfield, Craig A. Steiner and Christopher A. Steiner; seven great-grandchildren: Taylor Elizabeth Welliver, Rachael Eileen Welliver, Alec T. Moul, Nicholas E. Moul, Jeanna L. Steiner, Erich A. Steiner; Jakob A. Steiner, and several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, where funeral and celebration of life services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, with the Rev. Mark Thiboldeaux officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association Northeastern Region, 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701 or the Columbia Montour Home Health and Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave., Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
