Mr. William Barney Mathis, age 88, of Old Yadkinville Hwy, Pfafftown died Friday, October 21, 2011 at Bradford Village West in Kernersville.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, at 3:00, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Ronda with the Rev. Dennis Murphy and the Rev. Thomas Bounds officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142, will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 Sunday night.

Mr. Mathis was born in Wilkes County, on May 4, 1923, to Will and Ennis Mathis. He was a member of Pfafftown Baptist Church. Mr. Mathis retired from Sears as the manager of the auto service department after 35 years of service. He was also well known for this woodworking and his love of gardening. Mr. Mathis served in the US Navy.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee Richardson Mathis; a daughter, Trina Gay Batchelor; four sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife, Mildred Woodle Mathis of the home; one son, William Dennis Mathis and wife, Diana of Kernersville; one son-in-law, Steve Batchelor of Pfafftown; three grandchildren, Kevin and Corey Batchelor; April Mathis; two great grandchildren, Lauren Dyson and Tara Dyson Shepherd and husband, Jake; one great, great grandchild, Kealy Shepherd.
