John David Neil and his brother William Neil were the only surviving siblings from ten children born to their parents. John's mother and father were both born in Scotland.

John David Neil married Sarah A. Nash November 27, 1865 in Mason county, Illinois.

They had the following children:
Carrie Neil
Clarence A. Neil
Susan Mary Neil
Bessie Nil
Anna C. Neil
Thomas A. Neil

John and Sarah (Nash) Neil moved to Oswego, Kansas, about November 1869.

The family burial plot in Oswego Cemetery of John David Neil has a large monument for him along with a smaller head stone inscribed "John D. Neil, July 23 1836, Oct. 25 1904." Buried next to him is his wife Sarah Nash Neil, and her head stone is inscribed "Sarah A. Neil, Apr. 6 1844, Feb 14 1880." Also buried in the family plot is Sarah's father Avery Nash. His head stone is inscribed "Avery Nash, Apr. 21 1812, Oct. 27 1894." These are the only stones in the family plot. John D. Neil Married second to Belle LeSoeul and they had two children, Earle Neil Neil and John David Neil, Jr. but they are buried elsewhere.
