      J. R. Smith and W. A. M. Johnstone, rode down from Brainerd on their bicycles yesterday. The wind was in their faces the entire distance, yet they made good time and reached Little Falls about 10 a. m. They intended to ride back in the afternoon but it looked like rain and they finally decided to go home on the train.—Transcript. (Brainerd Dispatch, 11 May 1894, p. 4, c. 3)

City Clerk Farrar, Deputy Clerk of the Court Johnstone, Sam Adair and J. R. Smith started for Minneapolis this afternoon on their bicycles, intending to make the trip in time to be present at the game of ball at White Bear on Sunday. (Brainerd Dispatch, 17 August 1894, p. 4, c. 3)

      J. R. Smith, W. S. McClenahan, Dr. Courtney, Geo. LaBar and Geo. Brown of this city attended the Staples Gun Club tournament at Dower lake on Saturday, July 3. J. R. Smith made the highest general average of any of the shooters, beating Geo. E. Trent, the state champion, by one bird. (Brainerd Dispatch, 09 July 1897, p. 4, c. 3)

Some sneaking individual made off with a coat belonging to J. R. Smith Monday, the article of wearing apparel having been laid down by the side of the road for a few moments while the gentleman was inspecting the bicycle path near the sanitarium. (Brainerd Dispatch, 29 July 1898, p. 8, c. 1)

Jas. R. Smith, the genial insurance man, has been wearing a broad smile the past few days that it is a pleasure to behold. The occasion of Jim's happy frame of mind is the appearance of a fine healthy son [Paul, born 13 March 1900, son of Jennie Paine Smith.], an heir. The mother and child are reported doing nicely. (Brainerd Dispatch, 16 March 1900, p. 8, c. 1)
