George Montieth entered military service as First Lieutenant in Company G of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry at its organization on June 20, 1861, for 3 years of service. He resigned on September 28, 1862, to accept an appointment as Aide de Camp on the staff of General Fitz John Porter. He was commissioned Captain of Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 1, 1863. He served as Acting Assistant Adjutant General, Second Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, from June 7, 1863, to May of 1864. George was commissioned as Captain and Assistant General of U.S. Volunteers on April 20, 1864. He resigned and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1865.
George was the son of Rev. John Lenox Monteith and Abigail Harris

He married Mary Barker Woodbury, the daughter of Francis Woodbury and Maria Porter, on May 23, 1865, in Jackson County, Michigan.
They had 6 children.
