Biography - Matej (Mathias) Herda
BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981, pg. 676

Matej Herda, son of Vojtech and Alzbeta Kohout Herda, was born in Sevetin, Bohemia, on January 12, 1848. Marie Jirik, daughter of Frantisek and Barbara Chlup Jirik, was born in Sevetin on December 8, 1851. They were married on May 27, 1872, and came to America in 1875, arriving in Wheatland Township, Rice County, in May of that year along with their 1 ½ year old son Vaclav (see V. J. Herda story). They were also accompanied by his widowed mother, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and their families, and welcomed to the community by brother, Martin, and his wife, Anna, who came in1873.

In October of 1875, Matej procured 40 acres of land and in 1891 an additional 120 acres. The family lived in a log house until a large brick house was built in 1908 by Joe Valesh at the south edge of Lonsdale.

Following are the children of Matej and Marie: Vaclav J., born in Bohemia, September 22, 1873, married Anna Simon in 1898, who died in 1901, he then married Rose Simon. Mary, September 25, 1876, married Jacob Svoboda. Catherine, November 26, 1878, married Albert Ruzicka. Albert, January 1881, moved to Lankin, ND, where he married Mary McDonald.

Frank, October 1883, died as a young single man. Anne, June 25, 1885, married Frank J. Tupy, and they were the parents of Monsignor Joseph A. Tupy (1911-1958) of Lincoln, NE, diocese. John W., April 29, 1887, married Anna K Trnka--lived on the homestead--family of 13 children including 2 Benedictine nuns, Sister Deborah and Sister Jonathan. Joseph, 1890, died at the age of 4. Rose, May 7, 1891, died in infancy.

Matej and Marie experienced the growth of the fast-expanding parent Czech community of New Prague, 12 miles from their home, where many of their friends resided. In 1902 they helped support the building of the last Czech community in Rice County, Lonsdale, which was on the northern edge of their farm land. From their farm they also watched construction of the Farmington to Wells branch of the railroad in 1900 and 1901.

Matej loved to carve and his descendants treasure the things he made, but the wider community remembers him as the tuba player in the celebrated “Smisek’s Brass Band.” In this native musical town of Sevetin he had played with Jan Sery, Tom and Albert Jirik, Vencl and Vojta Smisek, and they continued when they all rejoined each other in Wheatland Township. Dance halls in New Prague, Veseli, Lonsdale and surrounding towns were filled with music made by this band for generations. (The tuba Matej played was also played by grandson, Wencel F., and is still in his possession). The tuba playing tradition is carried on by a great-grandson, Mike Catalano.

Matej died May 19, 1925, and his wife died February 16, 1927, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of peaceful family living. They are buried on land which they originally procured when coming to the community and which they donated to the Immaculate Conception Parish of Lonsdale for the cemetery.
