Frieda Mueller Loehmann (1873–1962) began selling bargain clothing in her Brooklyn home in 1920. Frieda's husband, Charles, had been a flautist with John Philip Souza until his lip became paralyzed. Subsequently, they had run a haberdashery in Cincinnati. It did not prove a success, and they moved to Brooklyn in 1916 where she took a position as a coat buyer for A.T. Stewart in New York. She quickly became fluent in the ways of the garment district and eventually struck out on her own. Success at selling from home led her to open her original discount store in a basement on Nostrand Avenue (probably in 1921), then move to larger quarters in the former auto showroom after 1935. The store was legendary for bargain clothes, no dressing rooms, and the Back Room where designer clothes were to be found. Her son later opened a store in the Bronx and greatly expanded the business. But "Mama" Loehmann remained in Brooklyn, living above the store until her death.
