George was born in Yates County, New York, in 1844, and was 18 when he enlisted at Greene, New York, and was mustered into Company "E" on the 114th New York Infantry on 13 August 1862. He was wounded in action at Winchester, Virginia, on 19 September 1864, and was mustered out with his comrades-in-arms at Washington, DC, on 8 June 1865. He moved to Kansas and was married in Neosho County 12 March 1874 to Jane J Baird, and fathered at least five children with her at their home in Neosho County. In 1920 the Chappell family was living at Long Beach, California, where George was a member of Post 181 of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died at Long Beach on 22 March 1932. Jane, who was born in Illinois on 21 October 1851, died at Long Beach, 18 years later, on 30 January 1940.
