from obituary in The Miami Gazette, Waynesville, Ohio, dated 17 April 1872
"In connection with the two Armstrongs, he raised the old Washington Cadets, in Cincinnati, and served with his company under General Taylor in all his battles up to Buena Vista, when the company's time expired, and they were sent home. He then joined General Scott, and was with his army in all their fights. On his return home he engaged in the drug business with his brother the firm name being Burdsal & Brother. At the breaking out of the rebellion he raised the first cavalry company in Cincinnati, and joined the army in West Virginia, was wounded in the side at Cheat Mountain, which caused an abcess to form, with a partial paralysis of his right side; from this he never recovered, and it was the cause of his death. On the discharge of his company, in connection with Col. Kennett, he raised the Fourth Ohio Cavalry, and served actively for over two years, when he was compelled to resign, from ill health caused by his old wound."
