MARTHA COLEMAN, CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADER

Martha Ball Coleman, civic leader and businesswoman in Owenton, died Thursday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was 82.
Mrs. Coleman was a young woman when she was divorced and suddenly raising her daughter, Jackie, and son, Don, alone. She went to business school in Indianapolis, then returned to her parents' home in Owenton and set about providing for her family.
She also ended up providing for her community.
She became a secretary for the Farmers Home Administration - a position she held for 30 years. She helped organize the Owen County Women's Club in 1945, and recently retired as treasurer. She was active in the Owenton First Baptist Church.
In 1946, she married Chester Coleman, a farmer who later became a letter carrier. He had two daughters, Carolyn and Marilyn.
The following year, her son was killed in an auto accident.
Mrs. Coleman worked double duty, managing the office and managing her new family.
"I was a stepdaughter and I was a rebel," said Carolyn. But her new stepmother won her over. "She was constantly being sweet and kind - being herself," Carolyn said.
She turned two sets of children into one loving family. "She sewed for us, she knitted sweaters for us," said Jackie.
"If you could bestow the title of saint on anyone, she certainly earned it," said Carolyn.
Mrs. Coleman retired from the Farmers Home Administration in 1971. The town had an unexpired term open on the city council, and Mrs. Coleman was appointed. "Everyone knew her. They knew she would know how to manage things," Carolyn said. She went
on to run for re-election and served 10 years on the council. She also worked part time for then-County Attorney Bob Ford.
She filled her free time with knitting, needlepoint and reading.
Jackie said her mother taught her children "to be honest and hard-working and to always be kind to each other."
Survivors include her husband, Chester; daughters, Jackie Allnutt of Owenton, Marilyn Hayden of Lawrenceburg and Carolyn Whitson of Newark, Ohio; a brother, Sam Ball Jr. of Clover, S. C.; nine grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or the Owen County Library.
