Elizabeth Jane Simmons was born September 26, 1922 in Denver, Colorado. She spent her early years in Hawaii. Due to the economic downturn caused by the Great Depression, they returned to Denver. Her family were outdoor enthusiasts and Betty grew up snow skiing, ice skating, water skiing, hiking, and camping in Colorado.
Betty attended Colorado College and pledged Gamma Phi Beta. When World War II began, she started working at Rocky Flats Arsenal where she met Marry Ruth Allen and invited her to Thanksgiving dinner. Mary Ruth brought her brother, Jesse, with her and the following spring on May 28, 1944, Betty and Jesse where married at her parents home. As she waited for Jesse to return, she had the top of her dresser filled with photographs and mementos of him to remember.
In Dalton, Nebraska she was the bookkeeper for Jesse's LP Gas business and designed his award winning floats in the Dalton Fall Festivals. She had her own radio program, was a volunteer at Dalton Presbyterian Church, 4-H group leader, member of Eastern Star and always supportive of the many activities of her children and community. Betty's friendly nature was a great asset to the Manor Trailer Park business in Estes Park, Colorado. Many of the people she and Jesse met as "customers" ended up being life long friends..
Betty and her daughters, Susan and Beth, were trapped in the canyon the night of the Big Thompson Flood on July 31, 1976. They climbed to safety to avoid the raging waters.
Betty was a great hostess and was known for her wonderful meals and her enthusiasm for life. She knit beautiful sweaters, played a "mean" game of ping pong, loved to play cards and do jig-saw puzzles. She was the first of the family to hike the Grand Canyon.
Her home was always a place where the children and grandchildren would love to come for a visit.
Betty died on January 14, 2010 at the home of her daughter, Donna. She is remembered with great love and affection.
