Lloyd Ernest Durst, 51-year-old unemployed woodsman, died Saturday of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at his home on Negro Mountain west of here. Dr. E. I. Baumgartner, deputy Garrett county medical examiner, said Durst shot himself in the right temple and the left chest with a .32 calibre revolver. Sheriff Paul Fisher, who investigated, termed the death a suicide, explaining that Durst had been despondent and out of work for the past four or five months. Home at the time was a son, Elmer George Durst, 18, who notified authorities, and Durst was found slumped on the floor in the second floor bedroom of the small home. Police said Durst had remarked that he was going to put himself "out of the way." He left no note, authorities added. Durst was born February 29, 1904, a son of the late Eli and Catherine (Durst) Durst. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Audry (Myers) Durst, Grantsville; Elmer, Blaine, and Wilmer Durst, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Butler, Grantsville, and Mrs. Martha Winters, Salisburg, Pa. Also surviving are a brother, Abe Durst, Jennerstown, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Mintie Platter, RD Grantsville, and Mrs. Ida Durst, Meyersdale, Pa.; and four grandchildren. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Laughlin Church on Negro Mountain. Rev. Ross Speicher will officiate, and interment will be in the family cemetery near Grantsville. The body is at the Newman Funeral Home here.
