Daughter of George F. McGinnis (1826-1910),Cival War colonel, 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry; promoted to brigadier general & Josephine McGinnis (1830-1908)
Mary Ella died of lung congestion in 1875. She was 5 1/2 at the time of her death. The beautiful statue of Mary Ella erected at her grave is the second to be carved. The first, made by Lorado Taft, a Chicago sculptor, was first refused by the family. A second likeness of the little girl was carved in Italy and has stood at her grave for over 128 years.
