Oldest Resident Dies After Illness
Chesterfield, Aug. 25 – Franklin H. Bryant, 88 years old, the oldest person in town, died in his hoe last night after a short illness. He was the son of Holly and Almira (House) Bryant and was the last survivor of nine children. He had always lived in this town. Besides his wife, Lizzie (Spencer) Bryant, he leaves two adopted children Willard Bryant of Northampton and Mrs. William Bates of Comton [sic], Cal.
Mr. Bryant has been a farmer for a number of years but retired recently because of advanced age. He was a member of the Congregational church, vice-president of Haydenville Savings bank in Haydenville and at one time served Chesterfield as selectman. Mr. Bryant was one of 20 men who by the deposit of $1 each established the Hillside Agricultural society in Cummington and was its vice-president at the time of his death.
Funeral services will take place in the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Ralph Danforth will officiate.
