James V. Andrews was born at home in Raritan Township, Monmouth, New Jersey, on February 3, 1893. He was the son of Charles H. and Angeline Vanderbilt Andrews. The 1910 census for his parents does not list James. He was two months past his 17th birthday at the time.

He was a lumberman living in Keyport, Monmouth, New Jersey when he married Lida May Bailey in Morganville, Monmouth, New Jersey on June 15, 1913. Lida was born in New Jersey in 1892 to Thomas Frederick and Minerva Bennett Bailey. James and Lida had a son William Harry Andrews (1917 - 1977). In 1917, James was living at 929 Lombard Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was working as a farmer for the Adams Express Company. James and Lida divorced.

James was living in Yorktown, Salem, New Jersey when he married Glendora D. Lewis who was also living in Yorktown. They were married in Alloway, Salem, New Jersey on August 25, 1918. They were married by Daniel W. Sheppard. Glendora was born in Yorktown, Salem, New Jersey on January 13, 1901. She was the daughter of Horace G. and Jennie Goforth Lewis. James was a farmer. James and Glendora lived in Pilesgrove, Upper Pittsgrove, and Elmer in Salem County, New Jersey where they raised their two daughters, Elizabeth M. Andrews (1922 - ) and Gladys Ruth Andrews (1924 - 2005). James died on July 18, 1971 in Elmer and was buried in the Woodstown Baptist Burial Ground in Woodstown, Salem, New Jersey.
