Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in New York City, he graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, in 1861 and was commissioned an officer in the Artillery Corps. With the advent of the Civil War, he was promoted a 1st Lieutenant in command of a unit for the 2nd Artillery Regiment, Union Army. From the first Battle of Bull Run, July 1861, to the Battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia, May 1864, 1st Lieutenant Benjamin showed great skill repelling Confederate forces with his artillery unit. For distinguished service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 11, 1877. Following the war, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Adjutant General Corps and the US War Department. He died suddenly at age 47 while on duty at Governors Island, New York.
