He was the father of 5 children from an earlier marriage to Amanda Richardson. Thomas' first marriage had ended with an uncontested divorce that was granted in September of 1888.
Thomas was a native of Delaware County, Ohio. Before his marriage to Mary, he was a sheriff in Jersey County, Illinois from 1864-1866 and published the Jersey County Democrat from 1866-1870. He was a county clerk from 1869 to 1870 and served as mayor of Jerseyville for 2 terms. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1869. He moved to Nebraska where he practiced law for about 5 years.
After returning to Hardin, he again practiced law. He was the editor of the Calhoun Herald for a time and served as president of the Village Board.
During his marriage to Mary, Thomas was elected state attorney for Calhoun County and served from 1888-1900.

At the time of her death, Mary was 38 years, 8 months and 9 days old. Survivors included her husband and parents.
Shortly after Mary passed away, Thomas was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives. He served in the federal government from 1901 to 1903, and then returned to Calhoun County where he resumed his law practice. He married Ethyl Huffstudder on 27 Aug 1904, and they were the parents of a daughter, Alice Aurora Selby Preis.
Thomas died in 1917. While Mary is buried at St. Norbert's Catholic Cemetery, her husband is buried by his ex-wife, Amanda, in the adjoining Hardin City Cemetery.

DEATH OF MRS. T. J. SELBY
After seventeen months of incessent pain the good woman is visited by the death angel. And her soul departs to the Great Comforter. Our community was greatly shocked, although not necessarily surprised, Tuesday morning, when the sad news of Mrs. T. J. Selby's death was announced. She departed this life at her home in Hardin, Ill., at 4 o'clock that morning, after a painful illness of seventeen months, with cancer.
