George Pontius, private in Captian John Clark's Company, 4th Battalion, Northumberland County Militia, 1776. Also, private in Captian George Overmier's Company and Captian John Forster's Company of Rangers on the Frontier for Northumberland County. He was listed under the name Ponges and Pongeas. Pennsylvania Archives 2nd series, Volume 14, page 343, third series, Volume 23, pages 243-244. 5th series, Volume 8, page 659.

One of seven brothers who served in the Revolutionary War, and his father was recognized by the DAR for performing service through the payment of the supply tax. Perhaps an unparalleled dedication by a single family.

George Pontius has his name engraved on his tombstone with the same surname spelling as his brother, Andreas (Andrew).
