John F. Furey Sr. Church custodian, Exxon Bayway pipefitter. World War II Navy veteran, 86. John F. Furey Sr., 86, of Elizabeth died Tuesday at home. A service will be held on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. at the Leonard Home for Funerals, 242 W. Jersey St., Elizabeth, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Genevieve's RC Church, Elizabeth. Interment is at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia. Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Born in Jersey City, Mr. Furey lived in Elizabeth for 55 years. He was a custodian at St. Genevieve's Church for 12 years before retiring in 1977. Before that, he was a pipefitter at the Exxon Bayway refinery for 20 years. A World War II Navy veteran who served in the Pacific, Mr. Furey was a member of the St. Genevieve's Church Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus Council 253, both of Elizabeth. Predeceased by his wife, Margaret (nee Goodman), in 1973, Mr. Furey is survived by five sons, John Jr., of Elizabeth, William and his wife, Susan, of Bridgewater, James of Fairfield, Iowa, Brian of Bloomfield, and Mark of Elizabeth; a sister, Winifred Tate of Wagontown, Pa., and two grandchildren, Erin and Timothy Furey.
