Mary Ann Stoops was the daughter of John B Stoops and Mary Ann Dawson (married 4 Aug 1847 in OH). She married William Ledgerwood Moffett, on 25 Jun 1889 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

They had one daughter, Mary "M'Ledge" Ledgerwood Moffett.

On the 1860 Camden, Ray Co., MO census, I found farm laborer and planter, John B Stoops, 33, KY born; Mary A Stoops, 30, Canada; Francis Stoops, 11, KY; Virginia Stoops, 8, MO; John Stoops, 6, MO and MARY A Stoops, 1, MO born.

On the 1880 Cincinnati, OH census, I found printer John B. Stoops, 52, OH born; wife Mary A. Stoops, 51, Canada; daughters: MARY Stoops, 20, MO and Izetta M. Stoops, 18, OH born.

25 Jun 1889, Mary Ann Stoops married William Ledgerwood Moffett, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1892, daughter "M'Ledge was born.

The following year, in 1893, they left Ohio for Virginia, and settled in Manassas. Mary became a pioneer in teacher training, in Rockbridge County, where she was also a supervising principal for 15 years.

On the 1900 South River, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found home owner and road overseer, William L Moffett, 58, VA born Oct 1841, wife of 11 years, wife Mary S Moffett, 40, Feb 1860, MO and daughter Mary L Moffett, 8, Jan 1892, OH born.

Mary's parents were last on the 1900 Cincinnati, OH census, John Stoops was born Aug 1826, and was married 52 years to wife, Mary A Stoops, born Feb 1827 and were both age 73. John was born in OH and his parents both in VA. Mary was born in Canada and her parents in England.

Mary's husband, William Ledgerwood Moffett died on 24 Sep 1908.

On the 1910 Manassas, Prince William Co., VA census, I found teacher and principal, Mary S Moffett, 51, MO; daughter Mary L Moffett, 18, OH; nephew and hotel asst mgr Thomas A Schuly, 29, OH born.

On the 1920 Radford, VA census, I found widow Mary S Moffett, 60, MO and daughter and normal school teacher Mary L Moffett, 27, OH. They lived on Calhoun Street.

On the 1930 Radford, VA census, I found state college teacher M Ledge Moffett, 38, OH born and widowed mother Mary S Moffett, 71, MO born. They lived on Grove Ave.

The 5 Aug 1903 issue of the Lexington Gazette, mentions Mrs. M.S. Moffett, who appeared before the Rockbridge County School board, concerning the practicality of the Normal School and her proposal.

1905: "Mrs. M. S. Moffett, for some years principal of hte Rockbridge Normal School, now principal of the high school at Lincoln, Loudoun county, Va., announces that she will conduct a training school for teachers at Lincoln, beginning May 15th, and continuing five weeks." The Lexington Gazette dated 22 Mar 1905, p 3.

The 11 Aug 1909 Lexington Gazette says: Mrs. M. S. Moffett, principal of the Manassas Normal Training School, is visiting Mrs David E. Strain on Jackson avenue (Mrs. D E Strain was a related Moffett). Her daughter, Miss M'Ledge Moffett accompanies her.

Mary Moffett's teaching career started in a rural school near Buffalo Mills in Rockbridge County, Virginia. At the end of her first year, Rockbridge's School Superintendent asked the elder Moffett to "hold a model school 'to show teachers how to teach. "Moffett believed that schools could best be improved through educating teachers in basic subject matter and the development of techniques which adapted content of classes to the needs of children at various age and grade levels. Her model school plan was used in Rockbridge and Augusta counties and she taught in "summer institutes in Fredericksburg, Marion, Lexington, and Tappahannock. Moffett organized the first high school in Loudoun County, Virginia." The Radford University Archives. It has a large write up on her daughter.

The 7 Jul 1938 issue of the Manassas Journal, front page says:
Mother of Radford College Dean Dies. Mrs. Mary S Moffett, 79, widow of William Ledgerwood Moffett and Mother of Dean M'Ledge Moffett of Radford State Teachers college, died there last week. She was born near Warrensburg, Missouri, but moved in infancy to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was reared and educated. She was a principal of schools in Cincinnati and after her marriage to Mr. Moffett, she moved to Virginia where she was a pioneer in teacher training in Rockbridge county, and was supervising principal of schools at Lincoln, Manassas and Herndon. For fifteen years she taught in the summer school at the University at Virginia and was active n the educational work of the state for over 30 years, having held many officers in state associations. Mrs. Moffett came to Radford in 1916 and for many years was identified with the Women's club, church work and particularly with the war relief movement in Radford. She is survived by one daughter, Dean Moffett and ten nieces and nephews who make their homes in Ohio. Services were held at Tyler Memorial Presbyterian church last week, conducted by the Rev. G A Daniel, pastor of the Tyler Memorial Presbyterian church . Interment was at Sunrise Cemetery. Active pallbearers were J P Whitt, H C Graybeal, H M Stafford, Tome Jones, S L McConnell, C K Howe, Jr., all of Radford, and J M Baker. the latter of Salem. Honorary pallbearers were members of the faculty of the college.

Mary S Moffett, born 1 Feb 1859 in Warrensburg, MO, was the daughter of John B Stoots (sic) and Mary Ann Dawson (both born in Covington, KY), plus the widow of William Moffett. She died from myocardial heart failure and pneumonia at 12:57 a.m., on 27 Jun 1938 in Radford, Montgomery Co., VA. Miss L'Ledge Moffett of Radford (her daughter) was the informant. She was buried at Sunrise Burial Park in Pulaski Co., on 28 Jun 1938. VA Certificate of Death #14488.
