Ezra Burgess was the son of Nathan and Susanna (Wright) Burgess.
At age 28 he married Almira Lincoln Pratt, age 20, at Plymouth on Sept. 26, 1852. They were the parents of Louisa Annabella, born Aug. 17, 1853; Izabella, born 1854; Ida May, born Oct. 15, 1857; and Almira Lincoln, born March 19, 1861.
Burgess was a 38 year-old Seaman from Plymouth, when he enlisted in Cambridge, MA on Dec. 13, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlane, and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on Jan. 14, 1861 as a Private in Co. C. Burgess was engaged with the Regiment in 1862 at the Second Battle of Bull Run, where he was wounded on August 30, 1862 by a gunshot wound to the left thigh, and was also taken as a prisoner on this date. He was paroled by Confederate troops at Manassas battlefield on Sept. 4, 1862, and upon his release sent to College Hospital, Georgetown, D.C. He remained hospitalized until Nov. 17, 1862 when he was sent as a parolled prisoner to Camp Banks, Alexandria, VA on Nov. 17, 1862. Burgess returned to duty with the Regiment on Dec. 25, 1862. Per War Department records Burgess was reported as "Absent straggler" from June 30, 1863 and from August 31 to Dec. 31, 1863 was reported as "Absent without Leave." On Feb. 29, 1864 he was reported as "Absent Sick" at Alexandria, VA. He was transferred to Company E, 24th Veteran Reserve Corps on March 7, 1864 and was mustered out of military service on Jan. 17, 1865 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.
Burgess, age 77, died at his home 150 Oakland St., Brooklyn, NY at 10 p.m. on May 15, 1900 due to capulary bronchitis.
