Anthony Joseph Dravis Senior
DRAVIS Anthony Joseph Dravis, Senior, 91 passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on October 14, 2011, in Mobile, Alabama, following an extended illness. Anthony (Tony) was born on June 12, 1920 in Pueblo, Colorado, the fourth child of George John Dravis and Mary Elizabeth Dravis. He graduated from Sacramento Junior College in 1940 and later obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. While in Sacramento, he worked at The Sacramento Union newspaper as manager of the classified advertisement department. He entered the U. S. Army in December 1941 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. He served duty assignments in Taiwan, Guam, and many sites in the continental United States. He received numerous military decorations, medals, commendations and citations during his military career. After retirement from the Air Force in July 1966, Tony worked in San Antonio for the John Hancock Insurance Company, and later in Wiggins, Mississippi for the Archdiocese of Biloxi. While in Mississippi and Alabama, Tony worked for the Sterken Company, selling promotion materials, and later founded the Tony Dravis Enterprises. Tony was a loving husband and father, was a devoted Catholic and attended mass on a daily basis. He served as lecturer, Eucharistic minister and fundraiser. He was devoted to Catholic charity causes. Tony loved to play golf and was an avid bridge player who inspired his children, their spouses and his grandchildren to play hearty, competitive family bridge games. He especially enjoyed watching the Boston Red Six baseball team and the San Francisco 49ers football team. Tony is survived by his wife Carolyn Martin Dravis to whom he was married for 52 years. He is also survived by eight children and their spouses including Anthony Joseph Dravis, Jr. and his wife Frances (of Taiwan, ROC); Jeffrey and his wife Evelyn (of Houston, TX), Christine and her husband Darby Riley (of San Antonio, TX), Patricia and her husband Gordon Greene (of Spring Green, WI), Michael and his wife Roma (of Semmes, AL), Martin and his wife Yael (of Israel), Tim and his wife Rebecca (of Atlanta, GA), and Steve and his wife Melissa (of Mobile, AL). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Aaron Dravis, Justin Dravis, Christopher Dravis, Elizabeth (Chris) Turpentine, Charles Riley, Martin Riley, Grace Riley, Jed (Tracy) Schmidt, Sam Greene, Matthew Dravis, Alana Dravis, Lillie Dravis, Nathan Dravis, Jordan Dravis and Luke Dravis. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Austin and Jason Schmidt. Tony is survived by his sister Dorothy Dyzgurski of Mountain View, California. Tony is preceeded in death by his wife Mary Sule, and his siblings Alice, Dan, Ted, Marian, Banard, John, Bob and Tom. A visitation will be held on Monday, October 17, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at Our Savior Catholic Church in Mobile, Alabama. Mass and a celebration of his life will be held immediately after the visitation, beginning at 11:00 A.M. A burial service will be held on an as-yet-to-be-determined date at Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Tony's honor can be made to Catholic Charities of the Mobile or Greater Mississippi Gulf Coast or to your favourite charity.
