According to the 1850 Census record for his Mecum family in Walkertown, Forsyth County, North Carolina, Matthew Mecum was born in 1805. Bill Medlin, who is the groundskeeper of Love's United Methodist Church in Walkertown, is also the Walkertown Historian. He said that there were problems with the 1860 Census, so that only portions of the people who lived in and around the area were counted. Whole neighborhoods were missed. Apparently the Matthew Mecum family was missed because they don't appear on any of the other neighboring Census records. So we don't know if Matthew was still alive in 1860. However, we do know that he had died by 1870 because his wife Elizabeth "Jane" Campbell Mecum is found as a very old woman living with her daughter Elizabeth Ruth Mecum in Salem Chapel in Forsyth County in 1870. Matthew Mecum is nowhere to be found.
