He was born in the Kingdom of Prussia on 15 July 1847. In 1857, he came with his parents to the United States, and they settled in Watertown, and he has lived there ever since. He started learning his trad of Bootmaking at the age of 13, and started his own shop on January 1877. He married his wife Anna Schlueter on 1 Oct 1871 in Watertown (she is from Watertown). Together they had four children, John, Minnie, Amanda and Lydia. They belonged to the Moravian Church.
