Dr. J.W. Clayton, 80, Passed Away Thursday

Dr. J.W. Clayton, a Johnston City doctor for 54 years, died Thursday
morning at his home 1001 Grand avenue following two years of ill health.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist
church by the pastor, Rev. Charles R. Walker and interment was in the New
Rosehill cemetery at Marion.

Pallbearers were: Tom Brashears, O.H. Turner, Dr. C. C. Gillespie, Loy
King, and J.B. Ellis, members of the board of deacons of the First Baptist
church with who the Dr. served for many years; and Judge John Clayton,
Buford Howard, Wesley Felts, Ralph Hansford, James Parker, Mayor K. Neil
Thurmond.

Dr. Clayton was born Jan 8, 1875 in Franklin county near Ewing. His first
wife, Annabelle Cox, died in 1913. His second wife, Agnes Doty, died in
1938.

Besides his career as a physician in which he attended at the birth of
about 5,000 babies in this city and the community, he served on the
township high school board as its president and as an alderman from ward
two on the city council. He was an honorary member of the Rotary Club, and
a member of the Williamson County Illinois Medical Society which presented
him with a 50 year pin a year ago after he was confined to his home because
of illness.

He is survived by his wife Iola Thurston Clayton, five sons, Ward, Lester,
Vernie, Alva and Bill Clayton all of St. Louis; a sister Mrs. Gertrude Hart
of Munster, Ind.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
