John Wesley Gerber was the son of Maynard Wesley Gerber and Shirley (Bolton) Gerber.

John married Tammy Greenstreet and to this marriage 5 children were born. John and Tammy were later divorced. John moved to Omaha in 2007 for a new start.

On Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at approximately 1:00 p.m., John was gunned down at his job as a clerk in Howell's BP Gas Station at 7166 N. 30th Street (corner of 30th and Martin), Omaha, Nebraska, for no apparent reason, except possibly an attempted robbery. John was the 27th homicide in the City of Omaha in 2009.

John had just started this job the week before. The gunman to date has never been caught. From witnesses who saw the gunman run from the station, he was described as 5' 7" to 5' 10" tall, weighing about 160 lbs., wearing a black and white plaid, medium-length coat with a hood covering his head. He was wearing a dark cloth or scarf over his mouth. Only his nose and eyes were visable.

John was a personably, outgoing person who was friendly to everyone.

John served in the Army National Guard and went to Iraq during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. He was trained as a First Responder and served in that capacity when he lived in Kirksville, Missouri.

A quote written by John, "It's not what's on the outside but what is on the inside that counts. Love is a feeling, a personality that can only truely be seen from getting to know someone from the inside out and not from the outside in."
